JANET MCCAFFERY received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Philadelphia College of Art. She was a versatile illustrator of children's books, with a particular affinity for illustrating titles featuring magical and wondrous creatures, such a witches, wizards, goblins and elves. McCaffery had a close partnership with the author Mary Calhoun between 1964 to 1973, illustrating nine of her books. She also illustrated books by Doris Lund, Jan Wahl, Lee Bennett Hopkins, James Still, Cynthia Basil, and Eleanor Coerr.
The Swamp Witch, written and illustrated by McCaffery, was selected by the American Institute of Graphic Arts as one of the best designed children's books for 1970.
