KURT WERTH (1896 – 1983) was a German-born illustrator best known for American children's books. He studied at the State Academy for the Graphic Arts in Leipzig before being drafted into the German army. After his two years of service he returned to the Academy where he studied the new graphic techniques and tried them out as illustrations of literary works. Werth and his wife moved to Munich, Germany after graduating. With Hitler's increasing power, they emigrated to the United States in 1939. Werth found employment illustrating a Sunday column in the New York Times magazine. He began drawing political cartoons for a wide number of U.S. magazines with a political bent once the U.S. became involved in World War II. After the war Werth began to illustrate children’s books.

"The Witch of Hissing Hill" by Mary Calhoun, illustrated by Janet McCaffery (1964)

JANET MCCAFFERY received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Philadelphia College of Art. She was a versatile illustrator of children's books, with a particular affinity for illustrating titles featuring magical and wondrous creatures, such a witches, wizards, goblins and elves. McCaffery had a close partnership with the author Mary Calhoun between 1964 to 1973, illustrating nine of her books. She also illustrated books by Doris Lund, Jan Wahl, Lee Bennett Hopkins, James Still, Cynthia Basil, and Eleanor Coerr. The Swamp Witch, written and illustrated by McCaffery, was selected by the American Institute of Graphic Arts as one of the best designed children's books for 1970.

"Autumn Harvest" by Alvin Tresselt, illustrated by Roger Duvoisin (1951)

ROGER DUVOISIN (1900 – 1980) was born in Geneva, Switzerland and came to the United States in 1925. Among his more than 40 children’s books, he is best known for those featuring Veronica the conspicuous hippopotamus, and Petunia the silly goose. He received the Caldecott Medal in 1947 for illustrating Alvin Tresselt's White Snow, Bright Snow, and a Caldecott Honor in 1966 for Hide and Seek Fog, also written by Tresselt. In 1968 he was a highly commended runner-up for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award for children's illustrators.

"Autumn: An Alphabet Acrostic" by Steven Schnur, illustrated by Leslie Evans (1997)

LESLIE EVANS graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in printmaking. She has illustrated several books and also prints books and broadsides at her letterpress studio, Sea Dog Press, in Massachusetts.
